If you are concerned that a friend, family member, co-worker, or acquaintance may be in an abusive relationship, please take the matter extremely serious.  Do not wait!  Speak up immediately!  Voice your concern!  Here are some helpful DOs and DON'Ts when dealing with someone who you suspect may be the victim of domestic violence (Helpguide.org, 2010, Domestic Violence and Abuse):

Do:

  • Ask if something is wrong.
  • Express concern.
  • Listen and validate.
  • Offer help.
  • Support his or her decisions.
Don’t:

  • Wait for him or her to come to you.
  • Judge or blame.
  • Pressure him or her.
  • Give advice.
  • Place conditions on your support.
