The Battering Cycle:

Tension Build-Up:  In this phase the man usually blames his partner for his feelings or discomfort. He also gets irrationally jealous and makes up imaginary lovers. He becomes scared that his wife will leave him and this jealousy and fear of abandonment only intensifies his tension.(Thio, 2010)

Acute Battering:  In this phase of domestice violence and minor action can trigger intense rage. The male is in full control of the violence and he is the only one who can end it. He is in a form of tunnel vision, thinking that if he can't have her, than nobody will.(Thio, 2010)

Contrition:  In this phase the male denies that he was wrong and says the female provocked the violence. He makes promises of never doing it again and to get therapy. He makes threats of suicide to ensure that the female will stay.(Thio, 2010)

Other Causes:

  • Feminist theorists believe a major cause of abuse is the sexist, partriarchal nature of society; which treats women as if they were their husbands' property.(Thio, 2010)
  • Males who have lost control of their lives due to poverty, unemployment, drug abuse and alcoholism are all reasons some men abuse their wives.  With the lack of power in their everyday lives they find the only way to gain that power back is by beating their wives.(Thio, 2010)
